Atlas/Seaboard Down Under

There's been a bit of activity on the Atlas/Seaboard list of late wanting to know exactly what was published/reprinted here in Australia, Atlas wise. Find that out isn't as easy a task as it might first appear. Fellow Gredown enthusiast Spiros Xenos has been collecting titles and information from a number of collectors in regards to the various Gredown comics that appeared in Australia, and I'd hazard a guess that the bulk, if not all, of the Atlas/Seaboard material appeared in Gredowns. However, having said that, I can't be entirely sure of this and I'm not totally convinced. I've seen Warren material, for example, appear in their own dedicated lines (Vampirella, Creepy, Eerie etc etc) as published by Page and yet Warren material also turns up in Gredown books (Monster Factory). Same with Skywald. Hell Rider appears in Australia as a Gredown title, yet Skywald material also appears under the Page imprint. Charlton material suffers the same fate, as do other publishers such as Media/Stanmore, DC, Atlas/Timely, Fawcett, Archie, ACG and a host of others from the Golden, Silver and Modern ages. It may never be possible to track all of these stories down, at least until all the Gredowns released have been accounted for, but there's enough scope to have a good shot at it, plus we have a series of good starting points. Here's a list of all the known reprinted Atlas/Seaboard stories, where they appeared originally and where they appeared in the Gredown reprints.

THE BRUTE #1
Published twice, once as a $0.40 title and then again as a $1.00 reprint.

The Brute reprints the following Atlas stories:
Night Of The Brute (Brute; The #1)
Attack Of The Reptile Men (Brute; The #2)
Live or Let Die (Brute; The #3)
The Bog Beast: The Fifty Dollar Body (Tales Of Evil #2)

You can read more about The Brute here.

IRONJAW #1
$0.40 cover price, possibly reprinted (reprint not yet verified).

Ironjaw reprints the following Atlas stories:
The Saga Of Ironjaw (Ironjaw #1)*
Ironjaw The King (Ironjaw #2)
The Wolf-Cowled Head-Hunters Of Amun-Rak (Ironjaw #3)
And Who Will Forge A Jaw Of Iron? (Ironjaw #4)
Requiem For A Werewolf! (Tales Of Evil #2)

*NOTE: Ironjaw #1 only reprinted the splash page to this story, as the end page for the book. The copy was altered to include a blurb for a second issue of Ironjaw. As there were only two, perhaps three stories left it's also possible that a second volume of Ironjaw could have appeared, padded out with other Atlas material. However the Australian Ironjaw did not reprint the entire first Ironjaw story.

MORLOCK 2001 #1
$0.50 cover price, possibly reprinted (I'm sure I've seen the $1.00 variant).

Morlock 2001 reprinted the following Atlas stories:
The Coming Of Morlock (Morlock 2001 #1)
Morlock Must Be Destroyed (Morlock 2001 #2)
Then Came The Midnight Man (Morlock 2001 #3)

As with The Brute, this book reprinted the entire run of Morlock. The book was padded out with two Charlton stories:
Minotaur (The Many Ghosts of Dr. Graves #59)
The Knight: Operation Rotten Apple (E-Man #1)

THE TARANTULA #nn
Published twice, $0.50 and $1.00 priced issues exist.

The Tarantula contained the following Atlas stories:
Spawn Of The Devil (Tales of Evil #1)
Curse Of The Tarantula (Weird Suspense #1)
The Revenge Of The Spider Witch (Weird Suspense #2)
Mind Over Matter = Murder (Weird Suspense #3)

STRANGE EXPERIENCE #4
$0.40, it's very unlikely that this title was reprinted.

Strange Experience #4 contained the following Atlas stories:
The Devil's Procuress (Devilina #2)
Escape from Nine by One (Thrilling Adventure Stories #1)
The Sting of Death (Thrilling Adventure Stories #1)
The Temple of the Spider (Thrilling Adventure Stories #2)
A Second Life (Weird Tales of the Macabre # 1)
Speed Demon (Weird Tales of the Macabre # 1)
Time Lapse (Weird Tales of the Macabre # 1)
Carrion of the Gods (Weird Tales of the Macabre # 2)

Strange Experience appears to be the dumping ground for the bulk of the Atlas material that didn't have it's own dedicated titles (Morlock, Brute, Ironjaw etc etc).

STRANGE EXPERIENCE #5
$0.40, it's very unlikely that this title was reprinted.

Strange Experience #5 contained the following Atlas stories:
Dr. Mercurio's Diary (Weird Tales of the Macabre # 2)
A Job Well Done (Thrilling Adventure Stories # 1)
The Kromag Saga: Kromag The Killer (Thrilling Adventure Stories # 1)
The Kromag Saga: The Valley of the Dinosaurs (Thrilling Adventure Stories # 2)

As will be seen some of these stories also appeared in other Australian Gredown comics. This book also reprinted three Charlton stories:
The Lurker In The Pit (Creepy Things #1)
The Grass Is Always Greener (Creepy Things #3)
Journey To Lost Orlaak (Haunted Love #11)

STRANGE EXPERIENCE #7

The rest of this issue was made up of stories from other publishers, including the following Charlton stories:

These stories also appear, I've not been able to track down their sources as yet:

The Creation

This book also contained the following, non-Atlas, stories:

Vendetta (Devilina #2)
A Matter of Breeding (Tales of Evil #1)
Tour de Force (Weird Tales of the Macabre #1)
Requiem For A Werewolf! (Tales of Evil #2)

This book also contained the following, non-Atlas, stories:
The Coming Of The Were-Hound
Evil Prowls The Night (Charlton)
The Werewolf's Ghost (Charlton)
Tour De Force
The Monster On The Moors (Charlton)

MAZE OF MONSTERS #2

$0.50 it's very unlikely that this title was reprinted.

Maze Of Monsters #2 contained the following Atlas story:
Capital Punishment (Unpublished by Atlas)

This title also contained the following, non-Atlas, stories:

The Monster Trilogy: Part One Monster X
Mr. Ober's Nightmare (Scary Tales #8)

The China Killers
The Doom Of The Moonlings
The Real Medium

What stands out for me is that I now believe that there are Gredowns out there that reprint the likes of Phoenix, Wulf The Barbarian, Destructor, Scorpion, Tiger-Man, Grim Ghost and possibly the Cougar. Those titles have enough stories to fill the average sized Gredown (anywhere from 48 to 96 pages) and with the discovery of titles like The Brute, Ironjaw, Morlock 2001 and Tarantula it's very likely that the other series were also reprinted. Atlas books like Devilina, Gothic Romances, Tales of Evil etc etc were anthology titles and as stories have popped up in Gredowns already from those books it's also likely that they were also reprinted, but sporadically and not in titles with those names. I've skipped the Vicki books as they were reprints in the first place, also the Movie Magazine books had no comic book related content of note.

One thing I want now is the contents for the first three issues of Strange Experience. I suspect that those books hold a fair degree of Atlas material. Strange Experience #4 is all Atlas, #5 fades off somewhat, so I suspect that issues #1 - #3 inclusive contain Atlas stories.

Feel free to go through what you have and cross reference it to this list - let's see what was reprinted. As more information comes to light I'll post it up and update this list. There's still quite a number of Gredown books to be indexed and there's no real rhyme or reason to them, barring the aforementioned Strange Experience issues. As also previously mentioned, it'd be interesting to see if there were further titles released into the Australian marketplace that were either fully dedicated to Atlas reprints, or unpublished material that has yet to be identified that might be circulating in the covers of books. Until more concrete evidence is unearthed it's all just speculation, but sometimes an educated guess is as good as can be offered.

hi.

I have the reprint of IRONJAW #1 - no date but it's a $1.00 cover price and adds the blurb BARBARIC TALES OF FURY UNLEASHED! across the top. Also, it looks like the contents differs for the last story-VOYAGE TO HELL instead of REQUIEM FOR A WEREWOLF.

cheers,

dillon.
