More Newtons: Conan The Barbarian
For those who've asked I've listed and linked all the previous entries in the Newton series here. You can scroll down and select what you want to read, each link will take to the relevant entry/post. I'll also include a link to that page as part of the links on this blog.
Conan The Barbarian. Conan was part of the first wave of Newtons and features some of the most confusing continuity surrounding any Newton title. The chops and changes to Conan make the Hulk pale in comparison. Sadly the title was short run, but it did manage to cram a lot of classic Conan into it's 12 issues.
CONAN THE BARBARIAN #1 Published July 1975.
Contents:
The Coming Of Conan by Roy Thomas, Barry Smith & Dan Adkins (Conan The Barbarian #1)
Lair Of The Beast-Men by Roy Thomas, Barry Smith & Sal Buscema (Conan The Barbarian #2)
CONAN THE BARBARIAN #2 Published August 1975
Contents:
Rogues In The House by Roy Thomas, Barry Smith & Sal Buscema (Conan The Barbarian #11)
This issue illustrates my point exactly. The title went from issues (USA) #1 & 2 right to issue (USA) #11. It was all downhill from here.
The poster was of Dr Strange.
CONAN THE BARBARIAN #3 Published September 1975.
Contents:
The Twilight Of The Grim Grey God by Roy Thomas, Barry Smith & Sal Buscema (Conan The Barbarian #3)
The King And The Oak by Roy Thomas, Marie Severin & John Severin (Conan The Barbarian #10)
I have no idea where the Kull story came from, but I'd love to know.
The poster in this issue was of Iron Man, the swap card was Planet Of The Apes #3.
CONAN THE BARBARIAN #4 Published September 1975
Contents:
Zukala's Daughter by Roy Thomas, Barry Smith & Frank Giacoia (Conan The Barbarian #5)
Requiem For A Haunted Man by Gerry Conway, Russ Heath & Crusty Bunkers (Savage Tales #10)
I have no information about the poster or swap card for this issue.
CONAN THE BARBARIAN #5 Published October 1975
Contents:
Devil-Wings Over Shadizar by Roy Thomas, Barry Smith & Sal Buscema (Conan The Barbarian #6)
Requiem For A Haunted Man by Gerry Conway, Russ Heath & Crusty Bunkers (Savage Tales #10)
I have no information about the poster or swap card for this issue.
CONAN THE BARBARIAN #6 Published October 1975
Contents:
The Lurker Within by Roy Thomas, Barry Smith, Dan Adkins & Sal Buscema (Conan The Barbarian #7)
Requiem For A Haunted Man by Gerry Conway, Russ Heath & Crusty Bunkers (Savage Tales #10)
By this stage the continuity had settled down and was following a logical path. That wouldn't last.
The poster for this issue was the cover art for Conan #1. The swap card was Spider-Man #8.
CONAN THE BARBARIAN #7 Published November 1975
Contents:
Garden Of Fear by Roy Thomas, Barry Smith & Sal Buscema (Conan The Barbarian #9)
Requiem For A Haunted Man by Gerry Conway, Russ Heath & Crusty Bunkers (Savage Tales #10)
Proves my point. A jump from issue (USA) #6 to issue (USA) #9. Luckily a lot of the Thomas/Smith Conans were self-contained stories.
I have no information about the poster or swap card for this issue.
CONAN THE BARBARIAN #8 Published November 1975
Contents:
The Dweller In The Dark by Roy Thomas & Barry Smith (Conan The Barbarian #12)
The Intruder by Archie Goodwin & Russ Heath (Savage Tales Of Conan #11)
I have no information about the poster or swap card for this issue.
CONAN THE BARBARIAN #9 Published December 1975
Contents:
A Sword Called Stormbringer by Roy Thomas, Barry Smith & Sal Buscema (Conan The Barbarian #14)
The Blood Of The Dragon by Roy Thomas, Gil Kane & Diverse Hands (Conan The Barbarian #12)
This was one of the smallest of the Newton Conans (page count wise).
I have no information about the poster for this issue.
CONAN THE BARBARIAN #10 Published December 1975
Contents:
Dragonseed by Len Wein & Steve Gan (Savage Tales #6)
Curse Of The Undead-Man by Roy Thomas, John Buscema & Pablo Marcos (Savage Sword of Conan #1)
This issue saw a complete departure to the previous issues. By choosing to publish a John Buscema story Newton were clearly publishing what was left unpublished and just lying around. By publishing the Buscema story the book actually had a more contemporary feel (for 1975/76). This issue, however, is a mish-mash entirely. The back-up story, Dragonseed, actually leads the book off, thus relegating the main story as the back-up.
The poster in this issue was of Ka-Zar.
CONAN THE BARBARIAN #11 Published December 1975
Contents:
Red Sonja by Roy Thomas, Esteban Maroto, Neal Adams & Ernie Chau (Savage Sword Of Conan #1)
Black Colossus by Roy Thomas, John Buscema & Alfredo Alcala (Savage Sword Of Conan #2)
At The Mountain Of The Moon-God by Roy Thomas, John Buscema & Pablo Marcos (Savage Sword of Conan #3)
This issue was HUGE! I'd hazard a guess and say that this issue, and the one following it, were intended to be annuals or one-shot issues and instead, in order to get the product out, were merely re-titled as the series proper. This issue featured three consecutive (USA) issues/stories and would be the last Conan released before the title was cancelled. There would be one further issue and that would be it.
The poster was a stunning (early) Mike Zeck Conan.
CONAN THE BARBARIAN #12 Published February 1976
Contents:
The Green Empress Of Melinbone by Roy Thomas, Barry Smith & Sal Buscema (Conan The Barbarian #15)
The Gods Of Bal-Sagoth by Roy Thomas, Gil Kane & Ralph Reese (Conan The Barbarian #17)
The Thing In The Temple by Roy Thomas, Gil Kane & Dan Adkins (Conan The Barbarian #18)
Another giant issue, this one containing three consecutive (USA) issues/stories. After being cancelled the title was reactivated and just the one issue slipped out for 1976.
The poster was of The Fantastic Four.
Other Conan stories in the Newton catalogue were as follows:
Hulk Annual #1 reprinted Conan The Barbarian (USA) #8
Newton Triple Action reprinted Conan The Barbarian (USA) #21
